If 'Blood Meridian' is ever made it will probably be a contender for the best ever.

Fantastic, but brutal, novel.

Dances with Wolves was brilliant, along with the Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

That bloke being sliced down the middle in Bone Tomahawk, from the balls onwards made my eyes water.

Hateful 8 was a mixture of extreme violence with a lot of humour.

Good choices

A modern one that I’d recommend is Bone Tomahawk.

A low-budget film Kurt Russell did before The Hateful Eight and better, IMO.

Mallard the first 2 as was Magnificent 7 were based on Japanese samurai movies. I don't thnk GBand U was.

The G.B.and U. was memorable for the stand off at the cemetery and the amazing score.

Did I read a while back that it wasn't part of the Dollars Trilogy?

Sorry... Gunsmoke, not Gunspoke.

If you can find it the book Bloody Sam is a brilliant read. Sam P seems like a pretty nasty character much of the time. He liked to have a team of stuntmen, set builders, etc, around him whom he could get seriously drunk with and who would threaten or beat up anyone who got on the wrong side of him. A favourite hobby involved heading down to Mexico and meeting up with a large prostitute, screwing her and then giving her a serious beating.

20 year old Susan George was terrified when she heard him drunkenly telling some of the cast what he wanted them to do to her during the filming of the rape scene in Straw Dogs next day. She had to get some of the other blokes working on the film to step in and rescue her if things got out of hand.

Stagecoach is without a doubt the daddy of all Westerns. It set the mold. I studied at BFI film school.

I still think a A Few Dollars more and Fist Full are my favourite spagetti westerns. I think Once apon A Time and GB and U are a bit over ingulgent.

No Stagecoach? Peasants!

Searchers, Shane, the 5 Sergio Leone western fillums, Wild Bunch, High Plains Drifter, Outlaw Josie Wales, Dances With Wolves, True Grit (the original), too many to list really

Yeah Peckinpah was ahead of his time with his action scenes. The finale of The Wild Bunch is hard to follow even with today's technology.

Re: Which is the best western film of all time?
My favourite Peckinpah is still Cross of Iron despite it not being near his best and off topic. Comes from watching it fairly young, trying to see every war movie made.

I will say so many of his movies have women coming to enjoy being raped, which is kind of creepy.

Re: Which is the best western film of all time?
The screenplay of One-Eyed Jacks was written by Sam Peckinpah, who cut his teeth as a director on tv programmes like The Rifleman and Gunspoke. He directed three brilliant westerns, Guns in the Afternoon, The Wild Bunch and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.

I would say that his Straw Dogs is also a transplanted western, set in the west of England. The mild-mannered central character who is forced to fight aggression with extreme violence when his home and wife are threatened by less civilised characters.

Good shout on One Eyed Jacks. Also directed by Marlon Brando, only one he did.

Tombstone.

I read somewhere John Wayne (can't remember his real name) was working as a runner at one of the big Hollywood studios making westerns in 1920s. The technical consultant was a certain Wyatt Earp.
